PUBLIC BETA · REAL READING

Bring a PDF you want to read.

Pract is an early Android PDF reader for people who want to understand unfamiliar English without switching to a browser. No invitation is needed. Start with a selectable-text PDF; scanned pages need OCR, which this version does not include.

Read installation instructions and download Pract Beta from the official GitHub release.
What does AI setup involve?

The first beta uses your own Gemini API key, entered once in the app. Pract encrypts it on your device. Do not send your key to us or post it in feedback.

  1. Visit Google AI Studio and review its terms and availability for your region.
  2. Use a free-tier project with billing disabled if you want no paid API usage. Verify this in your own Google account; Pract cannot enforce it.
  3. Create a key and paste only the key into Pract’s AI settings.
  4. Select a word or short phrase in a PDF to request a meaning and example.

Google’s current terms restrict access by under-18s and require paid services for applications serving users in the EEA, Switzerland, or UK. This initial free-key beta is intended for adults in supported regions outside those areas; check your eligibility before installing. Limits and terms can change. Read provider terms.

Illustrated AI setup guide — draft. Provider eligibility is under review: Google’s terms specify developer/professional use, not consumer use. A personal key alone does not establish eligibility; do not treat the guide as approved AI onboarding.

What leaves my phone?

During an AI lookup, the selected word or phrase and up to 500 characters of surrounding text go directly to Google’s Gemini service. Pract does not upload the entire PDF. Free-tier inputs and outputs may be used to improve Google’s products. Don’t use confidential documents for this beta.

Book references, reading positions, saved words, and reading statistics remain in app storage on your device. Uninstalling or clearing app data can lose them; export your words first. There is no automatic cloud backup in this version.

This landing page has no analytics, trackers, or submission backend. Hosting providers and linked services may process connection data under their own policies. Feedback is submitted only if you explicitly send it through a configured channel.

Why can an APK download show a warning?

An APK installed outside Google Play may trigger browser and Android warnings. That is not proof of safety or malware. Verify the official source, version, and checksum; never disable Play Protect or broadly weaken your phone’s security. This beta uses free GitHub distribution, not Google Play. Read installation and AI setup instructions.

How do I look up a word or phrase in a PDF?

Open a selectable-text PDF in Pract, hold a word, and adjust the selection for a short phrase. Pract requests a contextual English meaning and example, then saves the result in Words. Read the explanation and return to your page without opening a search tab.

Can I use Pract offline or export vocabulary?

Reading local PDFs and revisiting already saved meanings work offline. New AI explanations need an internet connection and your eligible Gemini key. Export or import saved vocabulary as CSV from the Words tab. Imports are local and skip matching words without replacing existing meanings. There is no flashcard system, automatic cloud backup, or EPUB support in this beta.
