Draft guidance · beta 0.7.3-beta.1 · checked 7 October 2026
Set up AI once. Keep reading afterwards.
Three illustrated steps for eligible beta evaluators. These are schematic illustrations, not screenshots of a signed-in Google account. Google’s interface can change. No real key or account data is shown.

BillingNot set up
Set up billing — leave untouched
Open Google AI Studio on your phone and sign in with your own account. Review its terms. In Projects, check that your chosen key’s project has no linked billing account.
Do not add a card, buy credits or enable billing for this free-key beta. If your account/project is not eligible, stop here. Pract cannot verify or control Google billing.
2
Copy only the key

Your free-tier projectCopy key
A new AI Studio account may already have a default project and key. Otherwise choose Create API key and select the project you checked. Copy the key itself—not its display name, a command, quotes or a configuration line.
Never paste a key into Reddit, GitHub, email or a screenshot. Never borrow the developer’s key.

Save it in Pract

Cancel Save
Return to Pract Beta. Tap the sliders icon labelled AI settings. Paste the key into Gemini API key. Read the full consent notice, tick the checkbox only if every statement applies, then tap Save.
The key is encrypted using Android Keystore. You can remove it in the same dialog. Saving a key is not proof that Google accepted it.
Illustrated controls only. Google illustrations are based on its public documentation; the Pract illustration follows the current Android dialog. No setup duration or quota is promised.
Try one lookup
Open a PDF containing selectable text. Hold a word, wait for the meaning and example, then tap outside the card and continue reading. Extend the selection handles to try a short phrase.
Selected text and up to 500 nearby characters go to Google, not the whole PDF. Free-tier prompts and responses may be used to improve Google’s products. Never use confidential documents. Answers can be wrong.
“Paste only the API key…”
Remove surrounding quotes, spaces or labels. Current beta supports both standard and AQ. key formats. Do not share the key when asking for help.
“AI unavailable”
Check your connection and the correct key project’s availability, restrictions and free quota in AI Studio. A paid-tier prompt is not a reason to enable billing for this beta.
Want to stop using AI?
In AI settings, choose Remove key. Previously saved meanings remain available offline. There is no general offline dictionary or no-key AI trial.
Installation feels unsafe?
You can decline the APK. Do not disable Play Protect or device-wide security. Pract is not on Google Play; no Store launch date is promised.
